We loaded our cameras, and prepared for the 1 1/4 mile trip across the bay to Alcatraz. We ignored the signs to stay away from the island. We then quickly learned that an escapee must travel 1 1/2 miles (1 1/4 miles across water, and 1/4 mile down the sides of the island). Ok, it may not be a 1/4 mile, but it feels like it is after walking about halfway up. |

Pretty incredible place. Kuddos to the parks service which manages the facility - great audio tour. We didn't know it then, but we were looking at where we'd be staying on the way home - oh no, they're so similar, that was the Comfort Inn in Denver I'm thinking of, never mind. |

The island was used initially as a fort. The lower levels of the building below was part of that original structure. Then the island was used as the prison it is probably most known for. After it was closed in the mid 60's, Indians claimed and occupied the island (That's indian graffiti!). The Parks Service eventually was given the island as it stands today, and tourist now occupy the island. |
